Are you ready?
To start with you need to have a specific business idea, product, or service you want to get started. You could be starting a completely new business or expanding an existing business with a new product or service. It could be a commercial business or a social enterprise. The key thing is having a clearly defined idea that you can describe in your campaign to inspire support and encourage people to make contributions.
Making sure you are equipped with the knowledge you need before you start campaigning is also key. Our Crowdfunding Checklist will guide you step by step through the process of running a campaign from the initial planning stages through to after your campaign has ended.
For crowdfunding to work you need to have a crowd. Sounds obvious, but this is a vital point. For nearly all crowdfunding campaigns the contributions come from people you already know or have a connection with. This could be friends and family, existing customers, or your social media followers. Think carefully about who will make contributions to your campaign and whether you have, or can create, a ‘crowd’ you can call on to support you.
Know what rewards you are going to offer your campaign supporters. You are asking for support with your idea, and you need to be able to say what you are offering in return for different amounts of contribution. Many businesses have raised funding by offering products and services as rewards.
Lastly, make sure you will be in a position to get started once your campaign has been successful. Do you have the resources lined up – people, materials, and equipment, or premises – and can you deliver the promised rewards within the time you have committed to in your campaign.
How it works
People who like your idea contribute money in return for a reward they’ll receive once your campaign succeeds.
It can be a great way of growing support and awareness of your business.
You can also use it to test a new product or idea to see how popular it is. Remember the crowd are a potential source of funds, but they can also give you feedback on your plans.
