Covid-19 and women debated in the Scottish Parliament

First published on February 15, 2021

During the pandemic, women have been impacted by a combination of increased pressures to take on care and household responsibilities, as well as being more likely to work in, or own, a business in the hardest-hit sectors.

It is important that awareness is raised around these issues and on 11th February 2021 Gillian Martin, Aberdeenshire East MSP, introduced a members’ debate on the impact of Covid-19 on the lives of women in Scotland.

The motion presented that:

  • the pandemic has affected women in business
  • women across the country have been more adversely affected economically
  • they spent more time on housework and caring than men
  • women should be supported as part of the economic recovery

As the creators of the Women’s Business Centre, Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES) is on a mission to inform MSPs of the challenges affecting women business owners, so that women can be represented and supported through economic recovery.

WES encouraged women business owners to write to their local MSP with details of their experience over the past year in advance of the debate.

The Women’s Business Centre is here to help tackle the challenges of Covid-19 and running a business.
