    Sara's story

Sara is the founder and CEO of Healthy Nibbles, a solutions led business to enable healthier on-the-go and office based food solutions, underpinned by personalised nutrition & data to support the wellbeing of teams. Prior to Healthy Nibbles, Sara founded a brand and innovation consultancy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sara sits on both the Global Nourishment Advisory Board and Covid-19 Taskforce led by the International WELL Building Institute, is an Ambassador for Women’s Enterprise Scotland and is one of EY’s European Winning Women.

The Healthy Nibbles story began whilst at my father’s hospital bedside. Hungry, at 3am, I found that the only food available was from a vending machine. A poster next to the machine warned me ominously that “diabetes and obesity kill.” But the machine offered only the usual selection of crisps, chocolate bars and fizzy drinks; there were no healthy choices. Frustrated by this juxtaposition, and alongside my own personal wellness journey, I developed the concept of Healthy Nibbles. Today, I am leading the charge by bringing healthy home based, on-the-go and workplace food choices to offices, travel hubs and letterboxes.

    Know your Vision and Market

Launching and scaling a business is hard work. Recently an investor gave a nugget of advice that really resonated “learn to enjoy the journey.” Enjoying the journey is more attainable if you first understand what you hope to achieve; lifestyle business, global business, and know that there is a genuine need for the business. Decisions made within the Healthy Nibbles journey have been framed with the goal of building a globally scalable business. The market and need are clear and simple, yet urgent. Rising levels of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease are placing significant burdens on the UK economy. Businesses are losing 97m workdays annually due to poor diet. The NHS is at breaking point.

    Measuring Impact

As a business, Healthy Nibbles has been built with strong foundations and robust principles from the outset, committed to building a sustainable business with purpose. We are on a continuous journey to benchmark ourselves against some of the most stringent accreditations measuring our impact across workforce development, supply chain, innovation, equal opportunities, diversity. To date Healthy Nibbles have secured Investors in Young People, Living Wage Award, Scottish Business Pledge, Positive and are now working towards BCorp status.

Often, these accreditations are perceived as unachievable for early stage businesses, however it is a misconception if you take baby steps.

    Design Innovation

Passionate about Innovation, we are constantly looking at how we lead through experience design innovation. In August 2020, we launched the Wellness Hub. The tech-enabled innovation, which also aims to address the need for relevant, customisable concepts, delivered in a socially distanced environment, comes at a time when businesses are being forced to think differently about the delivery of health and wellness offerings.

With increased flexibility and distancing measures resulting in changes to occupancy levels across the majority of offices and co-working spaces in the UK and other countries globally, we’ve been working closely with businesses to solve this new challenge. Through its new unmanned retail concept, which utilises technology, data and insights, Healthy Nibbles have created an intelligent solution that can quickly adapt to these types of changes in a cost-effective and sustainable way.

    Wellbeing and Entrepreneurship

Being at the epicentre of wellbeing, it is staggering that one in three employees now struggles with issues such as depression and stress in their working lives. These statistics worsen when looking at entrepreneurs.

Many entrepreneurs fall into the trap of thinking that the business has to come before everything, with every waking minute dedicated to its success. But in reality, if you continue on this road for too long, you’re likely to reach the point of no return – stressed out, wiped out and burnt out. And that’s not going to do your business any favours.

Top tips? Not ground breaking, but the oldies are genuinely the goodies. Eat well, sleep well, exercise and celebrate the small wins.
